Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in

Hi, my name is Katey Thiry, and I am a psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) whose personal journey with mental health has greatly influenced my professional path. Living with PTSD has had a profound impact on my life, shaping my perspectives and fueling my desire to help others who face similar struggles. While PTSD has been a challenge, it has also been a transformative experience, teaching me the value of empathy, healing, and finding strength in vulnerability. Instead of letting my diagnosis define me, I have channeled it into a source of motivation to create a life full of purpose and connection—especially in helping others still struggling with mental illness.

Through my journey, I have learned that healing is a multi-dimensional process that involves the mind, body, and spirit. These lessons guide the way I approach my practice as a PMHNP, where I believe in the importance of treating the whole person. I use medication management as a powerful tool to improve my patients' quality of life, helping them stabilize and regain control over their mental health. However, I also recognize the importance of holistic approaches to healing, which is why I encourage my patients to explore practices like mindfulness, meditation, yoga, regular exercise, and proper nutrition. I believe that mental health is a dynamic and interconnected part of overall well-being, and that addressing all aspects of life is essential for lasting recovery.

I am passionate about working with individuals of all ages and with any diagnosis, tailoring my approach to meet the unique needs of each person. Over the years, I have worked with a wide variety of individuals, and this has taught me that mental health challenges are universal—no matter one’s age or diagnosis, everyone deserves care, attention, and understanding. I strive to meet each person where they are in their journey, providing them with guidance, support, and
evidence-based strategies to help them thrive. Whether it’s through one-on-one care, medication management, or other holistic interventions, my goal is always to empower my patients to achieve their full potential and lead fulfilling lives.

Outside of my professional work, I enjoy a variety of personal hobbies that nourish my soul and help me maintain balance in my own life. Reading and writing are two of my favorite ways to unwind, as they allow me to explore new ideas and reflect on my own experiences. Gardening and thrifting bring me joy and creativity, connecting me to nature and unique treasures. Exercise and cooking keep me active and energized, while yoga and meditation help me stay grounded and centered. Most importantly, spending time with my family is a constant source of happiness and inspiration. These activities enrich my personal life and inform my approach to mental health care, reminding me of the importance of self-care, balance, and finding moments of peace and connection in everyday life.

My educational journey has played a key role in shaping the nurse practitioner I am today. I began my nursing education at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, where I received a solid foundation in nursing and patient care. This early training taught me the skills necessary to provide compassionate care in various healthcare settings. After earning my nursing degree, I
pursued my bachelor’s degree at California University of Pennsylvania, where I deepened my understanding of healthcare and developed a passion for helping others. My desire to specialize in mental health led me to Wilkes University, where I completed my master’s degree as a psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioner. This advanced education has equipped me with the knowledge and tools necessary to provide evidence-based care to those struggling with mental health challenges.

My personal and professional experiences have come together to shape a deep commitment to mental health care and patient advocacy. I am dedicated to walking alongside those who need support, offering both compassionate care and practical strategies for healing. My mission is to continue to learn, grow, and help others navigate their own journeys toward mental wellness.
