ADHD Q & A

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a common neurodevelopmental condition that arises from the way the brain and nerve connections develop. These connections influence how the brain processes information, making it challenging to focus, stay organized, and regulate behaviors and emotions.

ADHD is part of neurodiversity, a concept that acknowledges the natural differences in how people think, learn, and process information.

From the perspective of neurodiversity, ADHD is a different way of thinking that gives each person unique strengths. The brain differences also cause challenges that affect daily life, school and work performance, and relationships.

When does ADHD begin?

ADHD begins during brain growth in early childhood, when the condition is often diagnosed. However, it might not be identified until the teen or adult years.

An estimated two-thirds of children diagnosed with ADHD continue to deal with their symptoms throughout adulthood.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

There are three types of ADHD. You or your child may have inattentive ADHD, hyperactive/impulsive ADHD, or a combination of both.

The symptoms in each category include:

Inattention

Inattention makes it hard to stay focused on tasks and follow directions. You may be easily distracted, overlook details, and lose important items.

Hyperactivity

The hyperactive symptoms of ADHD include difficulty staying still and being constantly active. Children might stand up when they should be sitting or fidget while sitting.

Adults with ADHD often internalize hyperactivity, resulting in feelings like irritation and nervousness instead of physical behaviors.

Impulsivity

Impulsivity reflects challenges with self-control. Symptomatic behaviors include interrupting others, acting without thinking, and making decisions without considering the consequences.

Is binge eating common in ADHD?

Studies show that one in five children with ADHD develops an eating disorder, including binge eating. Binge eating is defined as eating a substantial quantity of food at one sitting and consuming it in a short time.

People with binge eating disorder can’t stop or control their eating and typically binge at least once a week.

Even if people with ADHD don’t start binge eating in childhood, they’re more likely to develop the disorder later in life.
