Spravato Q & A

What is Spravato?

Spravato is a prescription nasal spray that offers symptom relief to adults with treatment-resistant depression. This mental health condition doesn’t respond to traditional antidepressant medication.

Spravato contains esketamine, a medication that targets NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors in the brain that regulate mood to provide fast relief of chronic depression symptoms. The medication also supports the production of glutamate, a neurotransmitter in the brain that plays a vital role in maintaining mental health.

Pioneer Counseling and Consulting offers Spravato as part of their depression treatment plans for adults.

The experienced medical team offers comprehensive psychiatric evaluations in their offices and through telehealth to determine if you’re a candidate for Spravato or another depression treatment.

When should I consider Spravato?

Spravato might be appropriate if you have major depressive disorder (MDD) that causes potentially life-threatening symptoms like thoughts or actions of self-harm or suicide.

The Pioneer Counseling and Consulting team might recommend Spravato if you’ve tried at least two other antidepressants without success. When combined with psychotherapy, Spravato can be an effective therapy for treatment-resistant depression.

Spravato might not be appropriate for you if you have allergies to its ingredients, if you’re breastfeeding, or if you take medications that interact adversely with esketamine.

What can I expect when using Spravato?

At Pioneer Counseling and Consulting, Sarah offers Spravato as an in-office treatment so that the team will supervise your response to the medication.

Sarah administers the dose you need while you relax on an exam table. You must stay in the office for about two hours for observation before a friend or family member can drive you home.

It’s best to relax for the rest of the day; Spravato can cause dizziness, sleepiness, and numbness. These symptoms typically subside within a few hours on their own.

Many people experience a noticeable reduction in their depression symptoms within a few weeks after starting Spravato. Sarah discusses how often you need treatment to stay symptom-free. She also continues to monitor your progress with Spravato during routine follow-up office visits and through telehealth appointments.
